Tim Perez was born in Fresno California, middle child of five girls and two boys, in a close-knit Latino family. His athlete father was Associate Dean of Student Affairs At Fresno State University and at age 42 his mother gained her Ph.D. from Stanford University, she is currently a Professor at University of North Carolina Charlotte, teaching English as a second language.
Hard work, upward mobility and community activism were watchwords in the Perez home, which produced two Lawyers, a Doctor and an impending MFA in Literature. His first-generation American parents got the family involved in the Bobby Kennedy Campaign in the 60's, the United Farm Workers movement and grass roots organizing for local and State elections.
At age 20, after a successful run in Jr. College basketball, Tim was accepted by audition at New York University, one of 30 candidates (and sole Latino) to make the cut out of 500 applicants… He graduated with an MFA in 1986.
Tim was hired straight out of school by the legendary Joseph Papp for the first presentation of A Midsummer Night's Dream in Papp's 1987 Shakespeare Marathon, playing opposite F. Murray Abraham. Other actors in that series were Al Pacino, Martin Sheen, Christopher Walken, Raul Julia, Morgan Freeman, Tracy Ullman and Michelle Pfeiffer. After critical and peer recognition Tim went on to appear in seven Off-Broadway productions as well as the most prestigious regional theaters in America.
California and family called and in 1993 Tim set up home in Los Angeles to embark on a film career. While he continued to enjoy respect and success in theater, including La Jolla Playhouse, Dallas Theater Center and Mark Taper Forum, the film roles were few and far between. He co-starred with Jennifer Tilly in the Indie film “Relax, it‘s just Sex” and “Street King” opposite John Seda and had smaller roles in “The Bachelor” “Oceans 11” and “Speechless” with Michael Keaton and Geena Davis. Secure in his place in the theater world, he longed for opportunities at film roles he could sink his teeth into.
In 1997 he met Canadian Gail Taylor at an event she had designed for the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. When their son Pablo was born in 2001, Gail and Tim decided to try Canada. They moved to Vancouver in 2002 where Tim has worked steadily in US film and television productions being shot on location. His career in theater has also continued, in the 2005 US tour of the Pulitzer Prize winning play Anna in the Tropics at Dallas Theater Center, Pasadena Playhouse and Arizona Repertory Theater Company… to rave reviews.
